Ewing’s Joey Wright was seeing 20-20, Saturday, Jan. 5, when the Tigers faced Niobrara/Verdigre in the consolation game at the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament.
The Ewing senior finished the contest with 22 points and 24 rebounds in the team's 61-52 loss to the Cougars.
Still, Coach Brett Kaczor thought his team rebounded from Friday’s 73-16 loss at the hands of the Osmond Tigers.
“The boys played to their strengths for most of the game and put us in an opportunity to get that first win. If we continue to learn and get better at taking care of the ball, we will have more opportunities like this to take advantage of,” he said.
N/V led 13-5 at the half, but the Tigers narrowed the gap to 25-23 at the break.
In the third quarter, Verdigre pushed ahead, 44-39 and added 17 in the fourth to secure the win.
Ewing scored a baker’s dozen in the final quarter.
A lack of concentration at the charity stripe hurt the Tigers, as they made 7 of 20.
From the perimeter, Ewing drained 15 of 41 shots, shooting 37 percent, while they went 5 for 17 from the three-point range.
